Autumn teaches us that change can be tender, that memories can glow like late afternoon sun, and that even what fades leaves behind a beauty worth remembering.

Having entered the autumn season of my life, I often sit in thoughtful solitude as golden memories drift through my mind. I ponder each and every one, drawn into the glorious fragrance of sweet remembrances.

There is comfort in the simple things, a calm in the knowledge that everything will change.

Having lived long enough to more fully embrace the circle of life, the seasons now bring a certain kind of hope.

There’s something quietly comforting about banana bread as it bakes—the slow bloom of sweet banana, warm vanilla, and toasted sugar filling the kitchen before the loaf ever leaves the oven. Its golden crust and tender crumb feel especially nostalgic on crisp mornings or rainy afternoons, when the scent alone can make the house seem softer, warmer, and full of memories. This simple loaf brings together ripe bananas and a touch of spice for a familiar treat that tastes like home in every slice.

This classic banana bread will always remind me of my mama and the gentle sweetness she brought into our home. Every autumn, as the days turned crisp and golden, the kitchen would fill with the rich aroma of ripe bananas, melted butter, and vanilla, wrapping the whole house in warmth. I can still picture that beloved loaf cooling on the counter, carrying with it the comfort of family, laughter, and ordinary moments that became treasured memories. My mama left with the angels on a cool autumn day, taking a piece of my heart with her, but she also left behind this wonderful recipe and lots of love baked into every slice. Now I’m honored to pass it on to you—a simple, tender loaf made to be shared, remembered, and enjoyed with someone you love.

Prep: 10 minutes

Bake: About 1 hour

Yield: 1 loaf
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ cup nuts
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the bananas. Stir in the sugar, eggs, salt, milk, melted butter, and vanilla until well combined.
  3. Add the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and nuts. Stir just until the dry ingredients are incorporated.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  5. Bake for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the loaf from the pan and let it cool before slicing.
  7. Store leftovers in the refrigerator or freezer for later.
It’s the first day of autumn! A time of hot chocolatey mornings, toasty marshmallow evenings, and, best of all, leaping into leaves!

Breakfast at Bernie’s: Waffles and Wisdom Coming Soon!!

At Bernie’s Café, every cup of coffee comes with a story—and some stories refuse to stay buried.

In the heart of historic Columbus, Wisconsin, Bernie’s Café is more than a stop for waffles, bacon, and hot coffee. It is a morning refuge where old friends claim the same window table, trading jokes, debating faith and politics, remembering those they have loved, and helping one another bear the ordinary aches of aging. Ed Johnson, a Norwegian storyteller with a gift for embellishment; Bill Welcher, a widowed hardware-store owner with more opinions than patience; Grant Belmont, a retired dentist facing fragile health; and Leo Gibson, a minister emeritus whose quiet wisdom steadies them all, have built a brotherhood around breakfast. Watching over them are Lou, the sharp-tongued waitress whose fierce loyalty hides a difficult past; Marlene, steady and observant; and Bernie himself, the café owner who understands that food can be a form of mercy.

Their familiar routine changes when newcomer Myra Davis walks through the door. Polished, watchful, and impossible to ignore, Myra brings fresh energy to the café—and raises new questions. She charms Bill, unsettles Lou, and begins asking about River Road, old land records, and the reclusive Deakins sisters, whose estate may hold secrets the town has tried to forget. As Bill’s loneliness makes him vulnerable to the promise of a second chance, Lou senses that Myra’s interest in Columbus is no accident. What begins as small-town curiosity soon becomes a search through courthouse files, faded maps, family rumors, and memories preserved beneath pantry floorboards and in long-forgotten ledgers.

As Grant confronts a medical crisis that may draw him closer to his daughter in Madison, Bill risks his heart on a woman he barely knows, and Lou must decide whether her suspicion is wisdom, jealousy, or an old wound sounding its warning too loudly.

As Myra’s connection to the Deakins estate comes into focus, another force emerges: preservationist Charles Pritchard, a man determined to protect history—even if protecting it means controlling who gets to claim it.

Warm, humorous, and gently suspenseful, Breakfast at Bernie’s: Waffles and Wisdom is a story about friendship in the latter seasons of life, the cost of loving deeply, and the danger of leaving secrets too long in the dark. Set against the comforting rhythms of a small-town café, it blends tender character drama with a mystery rooted in family history, land, memory, and belonging. At Bernie’s, every cup of coffee carries a story, every argument conceals affection, and everyone at the table must decide what is worth protecting—and what must finally be brought into the light.

The stillness between breaths is a quiet, sacred space — a moment of pause where the soul speaks most clearly, untouched by the chatter of the mind. This pause is not empty; it’s full of possibility, intuition, and the truth of who we are.

Restorative Sleep: The Body’s Natural Path to Healing and Renewal

How deep rest restores the body, renews the mind, and strengthens overall well-being

Sleep is one of the body’s most powerful forms of natural medicine. A good night’s sleep helps the brain, heart, immune system, hormones, and muscles work together in balance. While we sleep, the brain sorts and stores memories, clears away waste products, and restores the mental energy needed for focus, learning, and wise decision-making. This is why people often feel more patient, alert, and emotionally steady after a restful night.

Restorative sleep is especially important because it includes the deeper stages of sleep when the body repairs itself. During deep sleep, tissues are rebuilt, muscles recover, growth and repair hormones are released, and the immune system is strengthened. This type of sleep also helps reduce inflammation and supports the body’s ability to fight illness. REM sleep, another key part of the sleep cycle, supports memory, creativity, emotional processing, and brain health.

Consistently getting enough quality sleep can also support heart health, blood pressure, metabolism, and healthy blood sugar control. Poor sleep, on the other hand, may leave the body under stress, increase cravings, weaken concentration, and make it harder to manage emotions. Sleep is not wasted time; it is a daily reset that allows the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—to recover.

To encourage restorative sleep, it helps to keep a regular bedtime, create a calm sleeping environment, limit caffeine late in the day, reduce screen time before bed, and give the body time to unwind. When sleep becomes a priority, health is renewed from the inside out. Restorative sleep gives the body a chance to heal, the mind a chance to clear, and the next day a stronger foundation for energy, peace, and overall well-being.
