October whispers: slow down, draw close to the fire, and let the beauty of change warm your soul.D. L. norris

As I grow older, there is an increasing thankfulness for the legacy of family and dear friends. They gracefully dance into our lives. Some stay awhile. Others leave too soon. But the most important thing is that they were here. In one way or another, they all left indelible footprints on our hearts.

Cozy Butternut Squash Soup
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Makes: 6–8 servings
As October brings crisp air, colorful leaves, and cozy evenings, this velvety butternut squash soup is the perfect way to welcome the season. Naturally sweet squash, apple, warm spices, and a creamy coconut finish come together in a comforting bowl that feels like fall from the first spoonful.

This is a wonderful make-ahead soup for October gatherings, quiet weeknight dinners, or sharing with a neighbor. Pair it with crusty bread or a simple green salad for an easy seasonal meal.
What You’ll Need
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 white onion, peeled and diced
- 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
- 2 cups vegetable broth
- 1 carrot, peeled and roughly chopped
- 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and roughly chopped
- 1 medium (about 3 pound*) butternut squash, peeled, seeded and diced
- 1 sprig fresh sage
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne
- pinch of ground cinnamon and nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk
- salt and pepper to taste
How to Make It
Start with the aromatics. Warm the olive oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes more, just until fragrant.
Simmer the fall flavors. Add the vegetable broth, carrot, apple, butternut squash, sage, cayenne, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir well, bring the soup to a gentle simmer, then cover and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender enough to mash easily with a fork. Remove and discard the sage, then stir in the coconut milk.
Blend until silky. Use an immersion blender to purée the soup until smooth and velvety. If using a countertop blender, blend in batches and take care with the hot liquid.
Season, garnish, and enjoy. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Serve warm with your favorite toppings, such as toasted pumpkin seeds, a swirl of coconut milk, chopped herbs, or a sprinkle of cinnamon.

A Grateful Outlook
An act of gratitude is an intentional expression of thankfulness that recognizes the good in life and the contributions of others.
What Gratitude Means
Gratitude goes beyond saying “thank you.” It is the practice of noticing, valuing, and expressing appreciation through words, reflection, or meaningful action. It may include thanking someone directly, keeping a gratitude journal, pausing to reflect, or responding to kindness with kindness.

Why Gratitude Matters
Practicing gratitude regularly can support emotional, relational, and physical well-being.
- Mental well-being: Helps reduce stress, lift mood, and build resilience.
- Better sleep: Encourages a positive focus at the end of the day.
- Stronger relationships: Builds empathy, connection, and clearer communication.
- Physical health: Supports healthier habits and overall well-being.
Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude
- Say it directly: Thank someone for their help, presence, or encouragement.
- Write it down: Keep a short daily list of people, moments, or blessings you appreciate.
- Reflect mindfully: Pause to notice what is good, meaningful, or helpful in the moment.
- Show kindness: Let appreciation become action through thoughtfulness and service.
- Practice consistently: Use routines, reminders, or group efforts to make gratitude part of daily life.
How Gratitude Shapes the Mind
Gratitude can activate brain areas linked to reward, emotional awareness, and social connection. Over time, this practice can encourage greater contentment, empathy, and resilience.
Key Takeaway
Gratitude is both a mindset and a practice. When expressed with intention, it strengthens well-being, deepens relationships, and helps create a more hopeful outlook on life.
Gratitude changes the way we see our circumstances. Rather than focusing on what is missing, appreciation helps us recognize the value of what is already present, allowing contentment to grow in the moment.

Voyagers: A Journey Home Begins
Are you ready? Take a beautiful trip with me that begins long before the first photograph appears. This is an invitation to travel across time, memory, and landscape—to my ancestral home of Norway, the place where inspiration for Voyagers: Homeland to Heartland first awakened.
Several years ago, when Voyagers was little more than a dream stirring in my spirit, my husband and I set out on a 12-day pilgrimage to retrace the early footsteps of my Norwegian family. With every mile, the story drew closer. Oslo opened the door. The railway carried us toward Flåm. The Sognefjord stretched before us like a living passage through history. Bergen welcomed us with the weight and wonder of its past. The sights, sounds, and even the air itself were breathtaking—and somewhere along the way, I turned to my husband and said, with certainty, “My soul has returned home.”
Now, through these stunning photos and videos, I invite you to come along. Together, we will journey through Norway’s beauty, mystery, and memory—from city streets to mountain rails, from fjord waters to historic harbor towns—and discover the places that helped breathe life into Voyagers: Homeland to Heartland. Let the journey begin.

The Sognefjord cruise was spectacular, with one breathtaking view unfolding after another. Cascading waterfalls spilled down steep mountainsides, while cliffs rose almost straight from the water to heights of more than 3,000 feet. Stretching 127 miles and plunging more than 3,300 feet deep for nearly 60 miles of its length, Sognefjord earns its nickname, the “King of the Fjords,” as Norway’s longest and deepest fjord.

We’re on our way to Bergen, Norway—a city where mountain scenery, old-world waterfront charm, and centuries of seafaring history meet. Founded in the Middle Ages and established as an important center of trade by the 12th century, Bergen grew into one of Northern Europe’s great port cities.
Its historic Bryggen wharf became a major trading post of the Hanseatic League, where merchants handled stockfish from northern Norway and goods arriving from across Europe. Today, the colorful wooden buildings along the harbor still recall that busy maritime past, even after centuries of fires and rebuilding. Known as the “Gateway to the Fjords,” Bergen sits along Norway’s rugged west coast, surrounded by seven mountains and opening toward some of the world’s most dramatic coastal landscapes.
A virtual visit here feels like stepping into a postcard: fishing boats move through the water, narrow lanes lead back from the wharf, and misty hills rise behind the city.

Thank you so much for joining me on this virtual journey through Norway. I hope you enjoyed exploring its landscapes, stories, and heritage as much as I did. Returning to Oslo to bring our journey full circle, we’ll close with a discussion of Voyagers: Homeland to Heartland.
