Take a Deep Breath

Despite political, religious, cultural, or lifestyle differences, we can all agree that we are living in challenging times—if not perilous. Unfortunately, we’ve become all too familiar with words like “unprecedented,” “uncharted territory,” and “never before in history.” Unsubstantiated “facts” masquerade as truth. Tempers flare easily, often with dire consequences.  Families find themselves at odds with each other, and relationships suffer. Health concerns, financial stress, and relationship issues add layer upon layer of anxiety. Where do we turn for stability in an unstable world? How do we navigate uncertainty?

If you consider yourself a person of faith, now is an opportune time to define or redefine your core beliefs, particularly those that bring you peace and a sense of well-being.  Prayer, a positive and affirming action, is a powerful tool that costs nothing but yields monumental returns.

If you find serenity in nature, engaging in outdoor activities can profoundly enhance your sense of peace and well-being, offering a sanctuary from the chaos of daily life. Nature has long been recognized as a source of tranquility and inspiration. The sights, sounds and smells of the natural world can help reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and foster a sense of inner peace. Scientific studies have shown that spending time outdoors can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), enhance mood, and even boost creativity.

As an author, I find immense solace in my writing. If you enjoy journaling, closing your eyes for a few moments during times of stress, and allowing your mind to travel to a serene place is a restorative exercise. Once you feel a sense of calm, jot down your sensory experiences: what you saw, heard, and felt. This mental retreat can be revisited during turbulent times, offering a much-needed respite.

There are things that you can do and helpful practices that you can adopt to navigate stressful times. Find what works for you and then take a deep breath. You’ve got this!
